Barrie Houghton studied painting at St Martins School of Art. After travelling extensively, he became a theatre designer and then an actor. It was when Barrie moved to Suffolk that he started painting full time.

Barrie has had a number of solo exhibitions in London, Cambridge (Lynne Strover gallery), Ely (Old Fire Engine House), Dublin, Aldeburgh (Peter Pears gallery), Woodbridge, and Ipswich (John Russell Gallery). He has also been part of recent mixed exhibitions in Edinburgh, Bath, Ipswich Liverpool, Long Melford (Lime Tree Gallery) and Bristol, The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition London, and the Singer and Friedlander Watercolour Exhibition Mall Galleries London.
