Michael Matthews was born 1933 in Stratford-On-Avon, Shakespeare Country. On leaving school in Stratford, he took a job in the costume department at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, where he worked on productions starring Sir John Gielgud, Sir Michael Caine and Richard Burton.

Two years later Matthews was invited to exhibit a pair of seascapes at a prominent New York gallery, and for the next 15 years he remained their principal European contributor. During this time his works found their way into many prominent private collections, including those of the Mayor of New York, the ex-prime minister of Bulgaria and the Getty family.

In 1982 an English museum bestowed upon him the honour of being the only living artist selected for an important exhibition of Maritime Painting - and reproduced one of the works he showed on the exhibition poster.

Matthews continued to live and work in the United States, spending much of his time painting in the South West. In 1995, he moved back to England to live in Stratford-On-Avon.
