A beautiful and large scale oil on board depicting Beauvais Market and Cathedral in Northern France, by Alfred Montague.

In the foreground is the historic Place Jeanne Hachette, which has served as Beauvais' central marketplace for centuries. Towering over the market is La Cathedral Saint-Pierre de Beauvais, the unfinished Gothic transept that gives the cathedral its distinctly sheer, blocky, cliff-like silhouette.

The fine and atmospheric work is in very good original condition. It is signed lower right and presented in its original gilt frame with swept corners and centres.

Artist: Alfred Montague (British, 1832-1883)
Title: Beauvais Market and Cathedral
Medium: Oil on board
Size: 31.5 x 27.5 inches (80 x 70 cm) including the frame

Alfred Montague was a painter of landscapes, town ccenes and coastal Scenes. His landscapes are mainly of England, Holland and France, his town scenes mainly painted in Northern France and Belgium.

Alfred Montague’s style is quite distinctive, as he painted using a fluid brushstroke and subtle palette, not afraid to use impasto to reflect the light and to give his paintings texture and depth. His skies are particularly fine and in our painting he gives the impression of the cathedral parting the clouds to show the light above them.

Well appreciated in his day, Montague exhibited extensively in London and the provinces, at the Royal Academy, Boston Athenaeum, Pennysylvania Academy, Suffolk Street, the British Institution, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Society of Artists, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and the Dudley Gallery.
