Jos van den Berg was born on August 10, 1905 in Den Helder and died on November 14, 1978 in The Hague. An important figure in the Hague artists' world of the sixties - he worked and lived in The Hague from 1944 with his studio at Sumatrastraat 40.

Van den Berg studied at the Free Academy in Paris, Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam (1919 -23) and the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague (1929 -35). He was a student of Joop Kropff, among others.

In 1964, a design by Jos appeared on a stamp from the PTT summer stamp series (12+9 ct). He was a member of Pulchri Studio and the Posthoorngroep. Received the Jacob Hartog Prize in 1956. Work includes in the Hague Municipal Museum, Museum for Communication (Post Museum) in The Hague and in the National Collection.

Van den Berg took his talent for art from his mother's side. He received his first drawing lessons from the painter Jan van Heel at the Academy of Visual Arts Rotterdam. Van den Berg had quite a passion for drawing. It was customary for him to sit through Friday evening classes all night until Saturday morning.

Jos worked for two years as a retoucher for a photographer, after which he worked for four years for an advertising and decorative painter on Elandstraat in The Hague. From 1929 to 1935 he trained at the Royal Academy of Art. Van den Berg was taught here by, among others, Henk Meijer. He studied at the Académie Libre in Paris from 1935 to 1937.

In 1932 he received a grant from the Klinkenberg Fund, which allowed him to travel to Toulon-Hyères in France. Here he has put some works on paper and canvas. At the same time, he has received a Royal Subsidy bonus four times. In 1937 he won first prize in the Vigelius legacy competition at the KABK. In 1956 he received the Jacob Hartog Prize for his painting 'Mediterranean Sea'. Van den Berg has had exhibitions in both the Netherlands and abroad. In 1964 he designed a postage stamp for the PTT

Van den Berg was involved in painting, drawing (with pencil, crayon, pen and charcoal), etching and wood and lino cutting. Common genres he practiced were: nudes, still lifes, landscape views and portraits. His style fell into the modern-realist plane.

Jos Van den Berg was a striking appearance in The Hague: as a Lilliputian, he rode through the city on a modified scooter. He was a well-known face in the artist community. He was a member of Pulchri Studio, Teekengenootschap Pictura and co-founder of The Hague Watercolorists.
