A beautiful and large mid 20th century French oil on canvas depicting an old street in Rome, by Maurice Loirand. Striking and excellent quality work from the 1960's by this very interesting artist.
The work is signed lower right and presented in a fine painted wood Montparnasse frame. Inscribed with title on the reverse.

Maurice Loirand was born in La Montagne, Loire. He was a metalworker at the Arsenal of Indret. Resistant under the Occupation, he became a self-taught artist and moved to Paris where he met the painters André Lenormand, Fernand Léger, Matisse and Picasso. He also knew the poet René Guy Cadou, who particularly appreciated his work.
He travelled extensively with exhibitions in Paris, Rome, Milan, Rio de Janeiro, New York. He lived in Japan for around 15 years and married the poet Kazué Shimotori.
Maurice Loirand's paintings can be found among the collections of the Museum of Modern Art of the city of Paris, the Museum of Fine Arts of Nantes, the Naive Art Museum Anatole Jakovsky of Nice, the Museu do Sol in Penápolis.
