A fine large post-impressionist oil on board self portrait with a skull by Lionel Ellis. Excellent quality and condition large scale self portrait by this important 20th century British artist. Presented in its original distressed gilt frame.  

Lionel Ellis ARCA (1903-1988) was an important twentieth-century painter, illustrator, engraver and teacher who specialised in portraits, as well as equestrian and floral subjects. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, National Society, NEAC and extensively at the Redfern Gallery. His work is held at the V&A Museum, the British Museum and provincial museums, including Plymouth.
