A mid - late 19th century boiled leather miners hat/helmet. Made from leather that had been treated so that it became tough and rigid.
This particular example is of pleasing form and is still in very good condition considering age and use.
What makes this example particularly interesting is the large gash on one side of the hat, proving how hard these hats were. The object clearly struck with some force, but it did not penetrate the hat.
This hat was clearly very lucky for a certain miner. A good luck charm, perhaps?
