Notes:

Having studied at the Royal College of Art, Arthur David McCormick first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1889 and in 1891 was a founding member of the Chelsea Arts Club, along with his flat mate Frank Brangwyn.

In 1927 the tobacco manufacturers, John Player & Sons, commissioned him to paint the now instantly recognisable head and shoulders portrait of a sailor on their cigarette packets. Interestingly, John Player & Sons were part of Imperial Tobacco Group, as were Mardon, Son & Hall, for which there is a stock stamp verso.

McCormick is represented, among other places, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, Imperial War Museum, National Museum of Wales, National Museum of the Royal Navy, Grundy Art Gallery and Newport Museum.
