A large and beautiful oil on canvas depicting les favelles (corn stacks) in a landscape under a wonderfully atmospheric sky, by the Belgian impressionist Marcel Jeffreys. Presented in its fine swept exhibition frame, signed with monogram and dated 1898 verso

 

Artist information:

Marcel Jefferys had an English father and a Liège mother. The well-off family moved to Brussels around 1880. He received private painting lessons from the renowned painter Henriëtte Ronner and her son Alfred Ronner, a draughtsman-illustrator

Jefferys painted figures, genre scenes, landscapes, marines and still lifes in oil and watercolour in the impressionist style. He also made etchings. He was a designer of furniture, wallpaper, fabrics, tapisserie and interiors for the company Vanderborght in Brussels

Jefferys traveled in many European countries and undertook a tour of the United States of America in 1893. Works from that American trip were on display at the "Salon d'Art belge" in Geneva in 1894. During The First World War he moved  to Great Britain and he spent the whole war in London. The London oeuvre was exhibited at the Georges Giroux Gallery in 1920

In his own country he preferred to work in the Kempen and near Bornem

In the period 1890-1900 he was strongly influenced by style elements of Claus, Cézanne, Monet, Pissarro and Ensor. In the period 1914-1918 there was influence of work by Turner and Whistler that he saw in London

Despite his moderate modernism, he was denied entry as a member of Les XX. He was a member of La Libre Esthétique, Les Indépendants, Kunst van Heden, Pour L'Art and the Société Artistique et Littéraire in Brussels
