A very fine signed and dated 1850 oil on canvas portrait depicting Louis Marie Edmund Blanquart de Ballieul as Archbishop of Rouen, by Benoit Benjamin Bonvoisin
 
The Archbishop holds a scroll inscribed Concillium Rothomagenix 1850 which relates to a Roman Catholic council meeting in Rouen which dates back to at least the 14th century, this portrait presumably commissioned to commemorate the meeting of 1850
 
In very fine condition on lined canvas, presented in a 19th century gilt frame and ready to hang

Benoit Benjamin Bonvoison was born in Montvilliers, Seine Maritime in 1788 but worked from Le Havre, Normandy as a professional portrait painter for most of his life. He exhibited at the Paris salon and is represented in many French museums
 
Sitter Information:
 
Louis-Marie-Edmond Blanquart de Bailleul (1795-1868) was a French Roman Catholic bishop. He worked as a lawyer for a time, before becoming the third bishop of Versailles (1832-1844) and then archbishop of Rouen (1844-1858). As bishop of Versailles, on 18 October 1837 he presided over the Catholic marriage service of Princess Marie of Orleans and Duke Alexander of Wurttemburg at Versailles, and in 1843 he consecrated Versailles's main town church as the cathedral of the 33-year-old diocese. There is a portrait of him in the Musee des Beaux Arts de Rouen
