Artist information:

Charles Martin Powell was born in Chichester, England and was a self-taught artist. Powell travelled extensively, painting Plymouth, Southampton, Portsmouth and other subjects in the English shipping Channel. He is known to have painted scenes in the Mediterranean and he visited Holland frequently: the Dutch marine artists provided much of his inspiration.

Charles Powell married and had eight children. All his recorded addresses were in London: Paddington, Soho, Haymarket, Baker Street and Montague Square - locations which indicate fluctuating financial fortunes. Nearly all of Powell's exhibited paintings were marines painted from nature and he exhibited at both the Royal Academy and the British Institution.

The clarity in the depiction of his vessels and the precision of his figures were two of his most notable trademarks. Powell's work is rarely offered for sale because ownership usually is guarded by collectors who have recognized his superior quality. His work is to be found in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, the Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff and the Government Art Collection.
