A very beautiful oil on canvas from the 1950's by Gerald Norden which depicts the studio of his friend and fellow East Kent Art Society member John Stanton Ward RA.

The work shows Ward's desk and window ledge scattered with books, glass bottles, clocks, a tall oil lamp and an Italian flag. A number of canvas's are stacked up on the floor and there is a beautiful light coming from the large sash window behind.

This area of John Stanton Ward's studio can be seen in his work '' The Still Life Painter '' which is held by the Bury Art Museum. In that work the artist in viewed at the easel with his back to the sash window and his desk moved to the right of the studio. Please see final picture on this listing.

The work is signed lower left and presented in it's original frame with old exhibition numbers on the reverse.

Gerald Norden was a painter, writer and teacher, born in London. He studied at 8 Thanet School of Art under John Moody and at the Royal College of Art, notably under Gilbert Spencer.

Norden went on to teach at Sidney Cooper School of Art, Canterbury, 1942–7; was acting principal of Maidstone School of Art, 1947–8; then principal of Dover and Folkestone School of Art, 1948–71. As well as articles in art magazines he wrote A Practical Guide to Perspective.

Norden was a regular Royal Academy exhibitor and had a series of one-man shows at Trafford Gallery, King Street, Newburgh Street and Catto Galleries.

John Stanton Ward RA included Norden in his East Kent School portrait held by the Royal Museum & Art Gallery, Canterbury, where the group regularly exhibited.
